Bradley's success with Young Pioneers

BEXHILL High School pupil Bradley Gilbert was part of a group of youngsters who won first place in the first South East Reaching for Gold competition.

Year 11 student Bradley was one of the gold medal winning Young Pioneers who took the 5,000 prize.

The young people, building on their own personal experiences, developed a franchisable leadership course that can be delivered by young people to their peers.

The team plans to conduct a roadshow to share their leadership course across Europe, travelling with a specially-equipped trailer. The team is also developing a longer residential course, offering free places.

Over the last few months, the Young Pioneers have been supported by BT and the charity Groundwork to develop and commercialise their ideas.

Reaching for Gold challenges young people aged 14-19 to develop ideas that will make a difference to their local community on the themses of youth, community or disability.

The judges were highly impressed with their professionalism and presentational skills, as well as their ambitious plans to internationalise their product. The group received a trophy and cash to help them develop their project.

Team leader Luke Lancaster,14, said: "We are enabling young people to lead change. I would like to thank, amongst others, Bexhill High for supporting their students.'

Pauline Edwards, Head of Challenger House at Bexhill High, said, 'The school is very proud of the achievements Bradley has made during his time with Young Pioneers.'He has gained confidence and proved himself to have excellent leadership qualities which will benefit him greatly when he leaves us in June.'
