BREAKING NEWS: Worthing to become winter wonderland after winning snow competition

WORTHING has won a competition to be turned into a winter wonderland with snow and real reindeer descending on Steyne Gardens.

Thousands of people from Worthing voted to bring the Nokia Finnish Christmas Tour to the town, and the winners have just been announced.

Worthing was neck and neck with Newbury (right up until Sunday night when the voting closed) in the South England category.

Winchester and Littlehampton were both hot on its heels but Worthing residents rose to the challenge and pulled out all the stops to bring the Finnish Christmas to 750 Worthing residents.

The event, in Steyne Gardens on Saturday, November 28, will include non-alcoholic Finnish glogg and traditional star shaped plum tarts; carol singing: Christmas crafts: real snow and reindeers.

In the evening, revellers will also enjoy the Christmas festivities washed down with mulled glogg and warm cider while being entertained with live music.

The Finnish wonderland will be created in four giant tents inspired by the reindeer herding Sami people of Lapland.

John Rogers, Worthing Council deputy leader, said: "Since I first heard about this competition and started to publicise it just over a week ago there has been a fantastic response from everyone and Worthing soon shot into the lead.

"It has been a good example of how the town can work together when needed.

"I must play tribute to SplashFM for publicising this on air and to the local newspapers for their help."

People who voted in the Nokia competition will be invited to the event.
