But now, The George in Burpham could be in for a swell in custom as it was named as one of the best pubs in the UK by one of the nation’s top publican guides.

The George, in Main Street, was one of only three pubs in Britain to win the prestigious Sawday’s community pub awards after having demonstrating its commitment to the village it serves.

The pub now features in Sawday’s Special Places, Pubs and Inns of England & Wales, which lists more than 1,000 of Britain’s best pubs.

Karen Fabrizi, assistant manager at The George, said: “We were absolutely thrilled when we heard we had won. We have only been trading for just over a year, so to have achieved this award, in such a short period of time, is fantastic.”

A total of 15 other pubs were handpicked by judges across five different categories to become new additions in this year’s guide.

The two other winners in The George’s section included the Ring O Bells, in Compton Martin, in Somerset, and The Eagle & Child, in Ramsbottom, near Greater Manchester.

David Hancock, editor of Sawday’s Pubs & Inns of England & Wales was impressed with The George.

He said: “On the brink of closing in 2012, the freehold was bought by four local businessmen and shares offered to the community. Doors opened in May, 2013, with a new name and a new look. The pub is now thriving.”
