CAMPAIGNERS CALL FOR PURGE OF SIGNS

UGLY roadside clutter is the target of a West Sussex clear-up campaign '“ and there's a vast array of unnecessary road signs and other eyesores that could be removed.

In 2005, West Sussex County Council was one of the first two local authorities to sign up for the Clutter Challenge issued by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).

Since then, dozens of tatty road signs, many of them rusty and weather-beaten, have been removed '“ but in some places in West Sussex they have been replaced by even more garish new signs.

The latest new breed of speed signs is in the process of erection- and has been heavily criticised for its use of huge signs and appendages.

Many residents can list their own local pet hates and clutter black spots across the county's road network, notably the Steyning by-pass with its mass of signs, and flashing speed warning signs to be seen on the A27, the A24 and other sites.

On the A286 near Chichester, many motorists dislike the clutter of advertising signs on the 'Birdham straight', while others complain about the new proliferation of brown tourist signs throughout the county.

CPRE Sussex branch development officer Sarah Robinson said: "Any temporary signs which are not removed on time are really annoying."
