The Catsfield Boat Race: Don't forget that the next big event in the Catsfield calendar will be on Sunday 18th September when Catsfield holds its very own Boat Race. This is a charity event to raise funds for our village and one chosen organisation (this year, St Michael's Hospice) Teams of four will race round the village carrying homemade boats on a course around the triangle created by Church Lane, Church Road, The Green (The Triangle) which is 1066 meters. It's hoped this event will become an annual feature and there will also be activities for families, clubs and societies and a mini triangle race for children in the playing field. The committee of The Triangle, Catsfield have planned a day full of enjoyment, with the races commencing late morning when the three roads will be closed for two hours. All are welcome to come and shout and support the teams around the triangle. After the races, there will be food and refreshments in the playing fields, along with children's races, music, entertainment, falconry, axe throwing, archery and more!

A Last Night at the Proms: This latest event from the fundraisers for St Laurence Church will be a very special evening in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday 24th September. ‘A Last Night at the Proms’ will feature songs from the musicals and include a flag waving, rafter raising, patriotic singing of Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory. The performers will be the Rother Community Choir and the choir of St Laurence Church. Tickets are available from Sandra Shoobridge on 01424 774708 costing £10 each to include supper, liquid refreshments will be available to buy.

WI: The WI garden party held in Beryl and David’s garden in Stevens Crouch was a small, but lively affair. A marquee had been erected as you never know what an English summer will throw at you, fortunately it stayed fine, but the ever present wind made catering slightly difficult. The quiz, provided by Mary Ryman was even more difficult, having to solve fiendish clues to find Sussex place names. For instance “Ghandi was” turned out to be Eastbourne. The Committee were too busy serving tea to expose their lack of knowledge. Delicate sandwiches, sausage rolls, a wide selection of cakes and lots of cups of tea, plus masses of talking, made a lovely afternoon. Many thanks to Beryl and David, whose flower decorations made the event so pleasurable.

The next member’s meeting will be on Thursday 1st September (where has the summer gone?) at 2.30pm in the Village Hall. This will be the ‘At Home Meeting’ when members are invited to talk about their Catsfield house. There will be a raffle and the usual delicious WI tea, plus a chance to catch up with old friends for a chat. New members and visitors are always welcome at any of the meetings.

Sport: The cricketers played their last home game, again in strong winds and against a sporting Parkhurst side who could only get 9 players on Sunday. We batted first and reached 208 at tea with Derek Fuller 58 and James Wilson 97 not out, being the highest scorers. Parkhurst were all out for a very low score thanks to some good bowling by Louie McPherson, our youngest player finishing with 3 for 9. Tom Bristow-Diamond also finished with 3 wickets for 5 runs. There were some excellent catches, one of Tom’s being first class. Our last match is on Sunday against Netherfield away and we hope for less wind up on the ridge at Netherfield with no shelter for the supporters.

Farming: Farming continues with most crops now in and the rush to plant rape before the end of August is on. Now they will be hoping for rain, if only to settle the dust.

Theft: Did you see the neat new car parking area that had been made recently outside the entrance to the Playing Field? You had to have been quick, because within just a few days of its completion, some low-life thief had stolen part of the timber barrier which the Parish Council had paid to have erected there.

Mobile Library: The East Sussex Mobile Library will be in its usual place outside the Village Hall from 11.55am until 12.30pm next week on Friday 2nd August.
