FETE AND FLOWER SHOW: Tomorrow, Saturday, is the big day for the village when the horticultural society hosts the annual Fete and Flower Show at the Playing Field. Hopefully everyone submitted their entry forms for the Show to the committee on Wednesday and even now are preparing their entries. These should be exhibited in the marquee between 8.30am and 10.30am tomorrow and then the tent will be closed for judging until it opens to the public from 2pm until 4pm, when the cups and prizes will be presented outside the pavilion. Prize money should be collected from the Treasurer between 2.30pm and 4pm after which time all the entries should be cleared from the marquee.

The Fete opens at 1.30pm and will be even better than ever. There will be a huge number of stalls and games to entertain you. Cakes for sale, plants, bric-a-brac, books, tombola and many varied attractions including the Battle Town Band providing the traditional sound of this great village event. The WI will be serving their delicious teas from the pavilion and there will also be the ever-popular barbecue, with tables and chairs to sit and enjoy your food and soak up the atmosphere whilst listening to the band. Of course it won’t be too late to bring any donations for the stalls to the field in the morning and all contributions will be gratefully received. Bring your family and friends to experience and enjoy one of the old traditions that has been held in Catsfield for very many years.

FAMILY DISCO: The organisers of the Catsfield Boat Race are hosting a Family Disco at the Playing Field on Saturday (tomorrow) after the Fete and Flower Show from 6.30pm until 10pm. Entrance is just £1 with free parking and there will be a barbecue, Fruit Mocktail Bar (bring your own bottles), games and competitions.

CATSFIELD BOAT RACE: The next big event in the Catsfield calendar will be on Sunday September 18. This year marks the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings and to remember this occasion a small group of villagers thought Catsfield would benefit from a street event to raise money for village causes. Ninfield has their pram race and carnival, Battle has multiple events, so why not Catsfield? It’s a charity event to raise funds for our village and one chosen organisation (this year, St Michael’s Hospice). Teams of four will race round the village carrying homemade boats on a course around the triangle created by Church Lane, Church Road, The Green (The Triangle) which is also 1066 meters. It’s hoped this event will become an annual feature. There will also be events for families, clubs and societies, and a mini triangle race for children in the playing field. We have planned a day full of enjoyment, with the races commencing late morning where the three roads will be closed for two hours. All are welcome to come and shout and support the teams around the triangle. After the races, there will be food and refreshments in the playing fields, along with children’s races, music, entertainment, falconry, axe throwing, archery and more!

SPORT: It was difficult for Captain Keith Cook to get a cricket team on Sunday because of holidays, so we turned out at Sedlescombe with only ten men. An exciting high-scoring game ended with us beating them thanks to Julian Buss 50 not out, Tim Pitman 71 and David Taylor batting most of the innings for 45 in a total of 210 runs in response to their 209 at tea. Julian and A Jay got 2 wickets each and Andy Williams 1. Sunday we are away at Brightling Park.

Our footballers have learned they are now in East Sussex League division three with most of their fixtures being played nearby. The first friendlies have been fixed and they are full of enthusiasm. Talking of football, 50 years ago four of our then football team took the big decision to buy tickets for all ten World Cup matches in London, the cost of £3.17s.6d being a huge amount. Hay making was suspended for Mike and Christopher Davey, John Putland and John Philcox being the other two supporters. If one of them couldn’t get time off Richard Philcox took their ticket. They set off from Battle Station, adding to the cost, saw some great and some dire matches but had the whale of a time never knowing they would be watching England win the final. What an experiences, programmes have been kept and the memories linger.

MOBILE LIBRARY: The East Sussex Mobile Library will be in its usual place outside the village hall from 11.55am until 12.30pm next week, Friday August 12.
