Cheer on United on Saturday

THE biggest football match ever to be held in the town will take place tomorrow (Saturday), weather permitting.

Rye United are set to host Guernsey in the last 32 of the FA Vase, a prestigious national knockout competition for clubs below step four of the non-league pyramid.

Sussex County League Division One high-flyers Rye reached the quarter-finals two seasons ago, but all of their matches in that memorable run took place away from The Salts.

A big task awaits Rye because Guernsey, who were only formed in 2011, are second favourites to win the competition with a well-known bookmaker and have lost just once this season in the Combined Counties League Premier Division (which is the equivalent to Sussex Division One).

Rye manager Scott Price said: “If we play well, and defend well - which is key, we can beat anyone on our day. We know Guernsey are strong, but so are we. We can definitely win this match.”

Kick-off is 3pm and for a full preview of the big game, see pages 78 and 80.
