Commuting advice for West Sussex motorists

West Sussex people are being shown how they can get fit, save cash '“up to £1,000 a year for motorists '“ and reduce their carbon footprint during TravelWise Week, which ends on Sunday (September 27).

The event is being backed by West Sussex County Council.

Cllr Derek Whittington, cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, said it aimed to raise awareness of the problems caused by increasing congestion and pollution, and how they could be reduced.

"It also highlights the problems caused by unnecessary car use and the benefits of using healthier and more sustainable modes of transport," he added.

Being TravelWise meant you could be better off '“ financially and in terms of your health.

"Motorists who drive to work can, for example, save up to 1,000 a year if they share with just one other person," said Cllr Whittington.

"To see if anyone is making the same journey as you each day, log on to www.westsussexcarshare.com and register for free.

"Walking and cycling is a great way to save money '“ you could buy a bike for the cost of one month's petrol and you would never have to fill up again."

The week would encourage people to try walking, cycling, car sharing or travelling by public transport instead of using the car for some journeys.

"Commuters doing this just once a week could reduce their travel costs and the carbon footprint of their journeys by up to 20 per cent," said Cllr Whittington.
