‘Unique’ hand carved Buddha statue stolen from Chithurst Buddhist Monastery

A unique Buddha statue, hard carved from wood, has been stolen from Chithurst Buddhist Monastery in Chithurst, according to the latest Sussex Countrywatch Newsletter.

The statue was gifted to the Abbot of the monastery for his birthday on November 4, 1994, by a Cambodian carpenter.

It depicts the Buddha seated on a seven-headed cobra and is estimated to be worth around £500.

The name of the craftsman, Prasith, is inscribed on the base of the Buddha.
