Criminals staying at hostel- claim

ANGRY neighbours claim a hostel built for homeless youngsters is being used as a "doss house" by known criminals.

Rother leader Cllr Graham Gubby reacted immediately by setting up a meeting to examine the allegation and act on it if necessary.

Planning permission for the hostel on the site of the former Bexhill Clinic in London Road was given by Rother council in the face of considerable local opposition because councillors felt it would meet a major housing need.

It is operated by county social services.

Planning permission was for the hostel's use by 16 to 25 year-olds with a condition that all guests must be off the site by 11pm, say neighbours.

Cllr Gubby told the Observer: "I have already fixed up a meeting with PC (Steve) Croft and one of the members of staff at London Road and with Inspector Max Mosley to discuss what, in partnership, we can do to reduce the fear that there is an inherent problem.

"If there is a problem, then that needs to be addressed."
