News on waste collection services in Eastbourne

Bookings have re-opened for bulky waste collections in Eastbourne after the service was temporarily suspended in mid-March due to the coronavirus crisis.

Bulky waste covers items which cannot be recycled or disposed of in household or communal bins such as kitchen appliances and furniture.

With household waste, recycling and garden waste collections continuing as usual, bulky waste was the only element of Eastbourne council’s Environment First service affected by the pandemic.

Councillor Jonathan Dow said, “This is a useful scheme for our residents and I’m delighted it is back in operation after just a short break, marking our return to a full complement of waste services.

“I’m very proud of our Environment First team which has maintained a first-class service in the face of various difficulties such as staff shortages and a higher tonnage to collect with people staying at home.”

Waste crews and street cleansing teams will be soon be wearing hi-vis jackets with a message reminding people to keep two metres away while they carry out their work.

Councillor Dow said, “It is really important we continue to follow social distancing to ensure we are keeping both our workers and residents safe.”

Items will only be collected from outside homes for safety reasons.
