WILLIAMSON'S WEEKLY NATURE NOTES

SEEN a little blue butterfly in your garden lately? Ten to one, it's a holly blue. Gorgeous little thing.

Here is a photograph of one taken by Fishbourne photographer Brian Hen-ham who has kindly allowed me to use it.

If you are a really knowledgeable country person, you will get ten out of ten for knowing where you have seen that black speckling on a pale blue background before.

The egg of the song thrush.

It's a pure coincidence, but one is very similar to the other. Why nature (evolution) decided that such a colour combination could be a help to both parties '“ bird and also butterfly '“ seems a mystery. Blue eggs lying in a cup nest open for all the world to see seems to spell 'come and eat me'. They look like something for a party.
