Since the water company s appeal to extend its treatment works at Telscombe Cliffs was rejected in March speculation has been rife as to where its replacement should go.

Southern Water said it had been forced back to the drawing board and it would be a year before its new preferred site was revealed.

But people are worried Southern Water has its eye on Lower Hoddern Farm in Peacehaven.

Local Labour Party member and environmental campaigner John Carden said reliable sources had told him Southern Water was considering the farm site, north of the Sports Park.

He said: 'If they try to build a similar project to the expansion of Portobello there will be a public outcry in Peacehaven.

Peacehaven and Telscombe s MP Des Turner was keen to make a pre-emptive strike to warn Southern Water away. Petition forms were distributed to all townsfolk last week for them to sign.

He said: 'Before they start making any secret plans we need to tell Southern Water loud and clear that they should rule out any greenfield sites as possible alternatives to Portobello.

'The community came together magnificently to defeat Southern Water s plans to build their new sewage works at Portobello. I feel very strongly that there is no reason why a greenfield site should be chosen by them as an alternative when brownfield ex-industrial sites exist to the east and west.

He added: 'Our environment and quality of life are worth more than any cost they might hope to save by building on greenfield land. Local people must be put before any shareholder profits.

If Southern Water decides against Peacehaven then Newhaven would be its most likely alternative.

Newhaven was its first choice last time round and the water company claims it was steered away from the town in favour of Portobello.
