FIRE NOT SUSPICIOUS

Police, along with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service are not treating the fire which broke out in a flat above a shop in Lewes High Street at 3pm yesterday (Tuesday, 5th September), as suspicious.

A Sussex Police spokesman said:

"A scene guard was put in place overnight due to the structural damage to the roof of the premises.

"An elderly man suffered minor smoke inhalation from the fire."

While firefighters were tackling the blaze a number of fireworks exploded.

The police spokesman added: "The fireworks which were stored in one of the flats is considered to be an offence under the Firearms Regulations Act 2004 and police have referred this matter to the local Trading Standards Department."
