Fleeing sixth-formers use their 'free' time profitably

A GREAT escape from Steyning Grammar saw 206 sixth formers in convict gear break out for a day of fund-raising on Friday - with more than £6,700 collected for Save the Children.

The annual event started with a hearty breakfast in the Sixth Form Russell Centre, after which the students broke out of their classrooms.

The escapees were cheered on by fellow students from years 10,11 and 12 as they made off in a collection of red and white decorated vehicles including a pink limo, a crane, a truck, a hippy style Land Rover and a fire engine, to name but a few.

The pouring rain did not dampen the spirits of students on the run as they visited local primary, nursery schools and local villages. Students also toured Brighton, Worthing, Hove, Shoreham, Storrington, Lancing, Portslade, Billingshurst, Pulborough, Henfield and finally Horsham.

All carried Save the Children collecting boxes and were finally recaptured at the Bandstand in Horsham.

The school Samba Band played as students were rounded up to pose for photographs before being escorted back to school by jailors.

Representatives of the Save the Children charity were there to give the students a good send off in the morning and witness the counting of monies collected in the afternoon.
