FREAK STORM HITS WEST SUSSEX

FREAK storms hit West Sussex on Monday night, when thunder, lightning, rain and hailstones the size of golf balls hit parts of the county.

Firefighters were called to the rescue at homes that had been hit by floods and lightning after they received reports of extreme weather damage.

The first call out, at about 9.35pm, was to West Green Drive, Crawley, where several homes were flooded after torrential rain. Firefighters tried to stop water going into the premises until the Highways Agency arrived with sandbags.

Residents in Washington, Ashing-ton and Storrington areas reported a number of 'eye of the storm' incidents during a two-hour period from 9.30pm, with thunder and lightning directly overhead.
