Friends' gift to seafront gardens

New railings have been installed to help visitors to an Aldwick beauty spot. The railings are on either side of the short flight of steps to the fountain at Marine Park Gardens.

About 5ft long, the metalwork has been made possible thanks to the Friends of the gardens.

They donated more than 440 and site owner Arun District Council arranged for the railings to be galvanised to become weather resistant.

This is the first of many improvements which the Friends want to see in the seafront spot following the group's formation last year.

Chairman David Garforth said: 'We are really pleased with the new railings and are very much looking forward to the next project.'

The Friends would be applying for grant aid to fund more projects, he pledged.

Arun senior community parks officer Carrie Marples said: 'I am looking forward to working with the group on future projects to ensure that the park continues to improve.'

The popular gardens achieved a silver gilt award in the best park category of the 2007 South East in Bloom competition. Gold status for next year is within reach.
