Fringe fundraiser for Clowns Without Borders

A Brighton Fringe venue has announced it will raise cash for a charity which brings laughter and play to children in war zones.

Brighton Spiegeltent, which will pop up on Old Steine during the Fringe in May, announced it will be supporting Clowns Without Borders UK with the ‘Heart of the Fringe Show’.

The event will take place in the Spiegeltent on Tuesday, May 8, and will feature cabaret, circus, music and a performance by the clowns, an exclusive talk from trustee members Cathy Hayward and Marion Duggan, and will also feature a prize raffle; all to raise funds for Clowns Without Borders UK.

Clowns Without Borders works internationally in areas of crisis, natural disaster and conflict where individuals (particularly children) are in dire need of different forms of aid. The charity provides ‘psycho-social first aid’ which focuses on the human, practical and emotional side of recovery from trauma.

Having just returned from their most recent trip to the Rohingya community in Bangladesh, after performing to over 2,000 people in one of the world’s largest make-shift refugee camps, Hanna Winter, a performer with CWBUK said she 'loved seeing so many friendships blossom'.

She said: "When I looked out at the audience I could see children gripping each other’s arms and laughing, just enjoying it together. That really made an impact on me, because I got to see the emotional influence of our work.”

Sam Holdsworth, founder and director of Clowns Without Borders UK, said: “We’re over the moon to be receiving this support from the Brighton Spiegeltent. Our work is demanding and resource-heavy, and any help we can get, in any form, is always greatly appreciated. So, to be partnering with fellow theatre and comedy lovers is just fantastic; thank you to the team at The Spiegeltent!
