Gardens and Allotments Society members defy British Summer

WHEN 60mph winds tore through Malcolm Moss' French beans the Gardens and Allotments Society Show competitor turned disaster into a novelty entry.

The twisted mass of intertwined beans were among items which gave visitors to the show at Bexhill Leisure Centre something to talk about.

Malcolm's attitude typifies that of competitors.

Whatever the British weather throws at them '“ and their gardens '“ somehow they get results.

As show manager Chris Bryen observed, despite this year's cold and wet and the ever-present high winds, members had been as skilful and resourceful as ever in providing top-class exhibits for the annual flower and produce show.

He said: "Bexhill gardeners and allotment holders have shown by their long, hard, dedicated work throughout the year that they can put on a show of which they can be justifyably proud.

"Considering the difficulties, the number of entries is remarkably high and to such a consistently high standard."

A great deal of hard work had again gone into organising this year's show by the society's officers and committee over the past year by revising the show schedule to the benefit not only of exhibitors but of visitors.

"It has been a long, hard day for the stewards, officers, committee members and other helpers but the support the society has had from their members made everything worthwhile.

"The show has been a great time to meet with old friends and make some new ones and generally have fun looking at the vegetables, fruit, flowers, flower arrangements, pot plants, baking, cakes, jams etc., handicrafts and photographs.

"The society's thanks as always go to so many people who brought in tombola and raffle prizes, cakes, jams and plants and, of course, the advertisers in the schedule and the sponsors of a number of classes in the show, particularly Rambler Coaches and Warburtons, as well as the exhibits from our friends in the East Sussex Fuschia and Pelargonium Society and the Eastbourne and Wealden Bonsai Club and John Phipps' display of begonias.

"It was nice to see so many people leaving with tombola and raffle prizes as well as plants, jams and cakes etc '“ so today was not one for diets!

"The society always attracts a large number of entries in the children's classes which hopefully will lead to their continued participation in the show in the years to come.

"New members are always assured of a warm welcome. With an annual dinner, discounts at local shops, holidays and regular trips, it is hardly surprising that the society has around 500 members."

The show manager said that at 1 a year society membership must be good value.
