GETTING BACK NORMAL

Traffic in Lewes is this morning (Wednesday) returning to normal after yesterday's major fire in School Hill.

The fire quickly turned into a major incident with the fire service sending appliances from the coast and the aerial platform ladder.

A mobile incident control centre was set up.

In the early stages of the blaze flames could be seen shooting into the sky.

By tea-time the blaze was under control but as workers tried to go home, they faced chaos.Roads were gridlocked.

Traffic from the north of Lewes was unable to enter the town.

A large crowd watched the fire.

School Hill - part of Lewes High Street - was closed first thing this morning. All the fire applicances have now left. Council workers have cleaned the street and traffic is flowing up the hill once again.
