Located on Merrywood Lane in Thakeham, the nine-bedroom home with an attached two-bedroom cottage covers 3.2 acres of land.

The impressive house, throughout its history, has featured in Country Life and other magazines, and in many books written about the life and achievements of Mr Lutyens, who is now recognised as one of Britain’s leading architects.

It is also acknowledged to be one of the best examples of Lutyens’ work and of significant architectural importance in the industry.

A representative at Frank Knight described Little Thakeham as: “A simple and elegant country house, combining vernacular Tudor with the Grand Manner, featuring wide bays and a south facing oriel window.

“Soft light pours in from tall stone mullioned windows, wide honey coloured oak planks blend with the mellow stone walls, and beautifully crafted iron door latches open polished oak doors into elegant and comfortable rooms with delightful views over the colourful well stocked gardens and landscape.”

Little Thakeham served as a hotel for holidaymakers looking to explore the surrounding villages but was later sold back into private ownership.

Now including nine bedrooms, a galleried double height drawing room, large dining room that overlooks unspoiled countryside, a wine cellar, gym, attached cottage, immaculate formal gardens and grounds, triple garage, swimming pool and pool house, it is no wonder that the property is expected to hit within the region of 5 million.

Originally thought to be a large blot on the beautiful landscape by its owner during the initial construction, the project was in fact scrapped before bringing Mr Lutyens on board to redesign the entire home, which shrouded the development and its architect in controversy.

It is now considered to be an historical landmark in the village described as the ‘best of the bunch’ by its late creator.
