BEXHILL MP Gregory Barker has expressed his delight at his new role of Shadow Environment Minister following David Cameron's victory in the Conservative leadership election last week.

Mr Barker had previously resigned from his position in the Whips to help manage Mr Cameron's leadership campaign.

He has in the past sat on the Environmental Audit Select Committee, sponsored a Genetically Modified Foods Bill and supported local environment campaigns.

The announcement comes after Cameron put environmental causes, such as climate change and renewable energy, at the top of the new Conservative Party policy agenda.

Mr Barker joined David Cameron last week at the launch of his new Quality of Life Commission, which is to be chaired by former Environment Secretary, John Gummer M.P., and Ecologist Magazine Editor and environment campaigner, Zac Goldsmith. Speaking in the constituency last Friday after the event, Greg said:

He said: "I am delighted to have been given this new role championing the Conservative Party's new environment agenda. Green issues such as climate change and sustainable development are some of the greatest challenges we face as a nation. David's clear victory has given him a strong mandate from across the Party to move forward and push environmental concerns to the top of our agenda."
