The Mayoress called fellow town councillor Jo Lewry from France. She said: Pat Fitton called me on Sunday evening to say David had been taken ill and they thought it was a heart attack.

Mrs Fitton, who cannot speak French, was very worried and feeling very isolated , added Cllr Lewry.

The couple s three children sailed out to be with them on Monday. The Mayor was expected to be kept in hospital for up to seven days.

As chairman of Newhaven in Bloom he recently celebrated the town s second place in the South East in Bloom small town class.

It is not believed the Mayor had suffered any heart problems in the past. Cllr Lewry said: He is always very active, rushing around and going to the gym.
