GREETINGS: Didn't we do well in Rio? Mind you, it will be quite good to get to bed at a sensible hour instead of after 3 o'clock !! I'm not a very sporty person (!) but I got totally hooked in the latter stages, especially the Women's Hockey, cycling and Mo. I hope it has a knock-on effect for the young people. I can't help feeling that it would be a better plan to keep schools' playing fields instead of building on them. Enthusiasm is all very well, but facilities are also necessary aren' t they? Give a young child a space and it will run all over it. So skills training as they get older will keep them active.

CHURCH NEWS: The 9.30 am service on Sunday, the 14th Sunday after Trinity, will be Parish Eucharist led by Rev. Bill Dolman. During the coming week we commemorate the beheading of John the Baptist on Monday 29th, John Bunyan on Wednesday 30th, St. Giles of Provence, hermit in the 8th century, who has many hospitals and churches dedicated to him as patron saint of the disabled.

CHURCH MARKET: Lovely lunches last Saturday, thank you very much. Such a buzz of chatter as well as delicious cakes, pies and jam and marmalade. There was some talk about future lunches or a possibility of soup and ploughmans’ in the coming months. We await information.

WEATHER: Is that it then, for summer? It was good while it lasted and so far the rain is quite warm. My agapanthas appreciated the rain. It will become September during the week, so maybe we shall have a lovely autumn. At the end of July, sunrise was at 05.20; on 27th August it was 06.03. At the end of July, sunset was 20.45; on August 27th it was 19.52. So the daylight hours are reducing fast.

BREDE: St. George’s Church, Brede is holding the Annual Flower Festival beginning tomorrow. The theme is Favourite Films. Opening times are as follows: Saturday 27th 10am - 5.30 pm; Sunday 28th 11am - 4.30pm; Monday 29th 10am - 4.30 pm when the Grand Raffle will be drawn. If the weather is good, take a trip up the tower and admire the view, visit Granny’s Attic, the book tent, plants and preserves, children’s tent, and cake stall. There will be sumptuous coffees, lunches, and cream teas on offer each day. On the Saturday St. George’s hosts an evening of JAZZ featuring Java Jam starting at 7.30 pm. Tickets are £10 from the Rectory - 01424 883 408 - to include a glass of prosecco and a light supper prepared by Gary of the Red Lion. Please bring your own drinks. On Bank Holiday Monday the Steam Giants will be operating, 10am to 4.30 pm. There will be an Art Exhibition in the Village Hall open every day 10am - 4.30 pm. The Red Lion will also have a Table Sale.

QUEEN’S HEAD: The live music on Sunday will be played the by Dave Paull Trio playing Covers. Ian’s total for his bike ride is not yet known.

ROBIN HOOD: The Bonfire Society Auction of Promises will be at the Robin Hood on Monday 29th August starting at 1 pm. If you have anything to offer for the auction please contact Kim Holland, Sarah Upton or Kevin Wall. All money raised goes towards the fireworks., and some donated later in the year to local good causes.

FOOTBALL CLUB: Icklesham Casuals Veterans Captain Mike Beaumont took part in the Bolton Iron Man Triathlon on 17th July. This saw some 2,500 people tackling a 25 mile lake swim, 112 mile bike ride through the Lancashire hills, and a 26 mile run through Bolton town centre. Mike completed the course in 13 hours and 22 minutes and at the last count he had raised £740 for his chosen charity CCHF All About Kids as well as a further £160 for the New Pavilion Fund. A MASSIVE well done to him.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: The world is in a mess. But sitting in a cafe drinking a cup of coffee isn’t going to change anything.

CHRISTMAS: It must be nearly the end of August, because I have received my first Christmas catalogue. Now I must decide whether to order cards early, which means I have to remember where I put them. I’ve done so in the past, and find I don’t always like what I chose in the summer. The season isn’t right somehow.

INK CARTRIDGES: Following the replacement of my printer, I have 2 Canon Pixma 40 black ink cartridges and 1 Canon Pixma 41 colour cartridge which don’t fit. Sod’s law says that a different size is needed on the new machine. Can anyone use them?
