It's sad to see BNP launch all-out attack in Bognor

It's with great sadness I see in the Observer the far-right British National Party has managed to find people in our area misguided enough to stand for them in the local elections.

The issues that my good, hard-working Labour colleagues have spent years addressing won't be tackled by the glib answers on race the BNP provides.

Wherever it appears, the BNP poisons the local political debate '“ people must realise the BNP is most definitely not a respectable party and votes for the BNP will damage our community.

What is clear, however, is that it has launched an all-out attack on Labour here.

One thing I cannot agree with is local Liberal Democrat leader Simon McDougall comments that he 'welcomes the opportunity to debate openly the matters the BNP wants to raise.'

No-one should offer the BNP a platform because it will only exploit it in an attempt to claim legitimacy.

We cannot give credibility to the views of people whose guiding belief is that the needs and views of other people are worthless because of the ethnic origins they were born with.

Having seen how this party has operated in other parts of the country, its presence here fills me with concern.

For the record, I don't welcome the fact we in Bognor are now forced into a contest with the political successors of Tyndall's National Front and Oswald Mosley's fascists.

It pains me that we have these people attempting to exploit others' prejudices here in my home town.

The BNP hopes we have short memories.

But residents must tell the BNP that Bognor is not a home for racism.
