Jury says double death was an accident

A construction worker who survived a high school crane collapse where two colleagues died sobbed as he gave evidence at an inquest.

The jury at an inquest held at Worthing County Court into the Durrington disaster returned a verdict of accidental death.

Surviving construction worker David Smith, an experience crane operator, described how he had climbed the 100ft crane loosening bolts on Friday February 11 2005 as part of the preparation for it being fully dismantled the following day.

The court heard such loosening was 'routine procedure' but a certain degree of torque was to be left to ensure safety of the structure.
