Leisure centre open day

VISITORS could try their hand at karate, ten-pin bowling, trampolining and even belly-dancing at Bexhill Leisure Cenre on Saturday.

An open day at the Down Road venue allowed the public to take part in a host of other sports too, all in an effort to encourage people to get more physically active.

The event was put on by Freedom Leisure in association with partners Rother District Council.

Adrian Gaylon, sport development officer for Rother, said: "We are using our partnership with the leisure centre and all the local clubs to try and involved and taking part in pysical activity.

"We are trying to let people see the activities Bexhill Leisure Centre has to offer and to show the benefits they can give to young people.

"The challenge is, once people have seen what it here, getting them to sign up and get fit and active."

Centre manager Paul Norris said: "It is great for the community and great for the centre. It gives an opportunity for people to see what we do and the facilities we have."

Youngsters could take part in multi-sports, gymnastics and learn dances from High School Musical.

Bexhill Karate Club gave taster sessions featuring their Shotokan Karate.

Sure Start were also represented at the event, offering advice for young families as well as providing an arts and crafts class and facepainting.

Karen Martin, Bexhill activities organiser, said: "We can provide information about our services as this is all part of the family environment. Parents can speak to us and the children can do their thing."
