Lions lay on lunch for more than 100

MORE than 100 senior citizens from the Rye area enjoyed a lunch recently courtesy of Rye and District Lions Club.

The lunch took place at Rye Community Centre. All those needing transport were collected by Rye Community Transport or Lions’ cars and returned home afterwards.

The seniors were welcomed with an aperitif of sherry or fruit juice before enjoying a full Sunday lunch of roast beef, followed by a fruit and cream filled meringue, accompanied by wine or fruit juice.

Whilst they enjoyed coffee or tea with mints, there were entertained by a talented group called Ro’s Gang, with a wide selection of popular songs, with many of the seniors heartily singing along.

The last number was a heart-felt rendering of “We’ll Meet Again”. The entertainment was followed by a free raffle of many prizes, including all the spring flower table decorations.

Rye Lions President Terry Cobby thanked Ro’s Gang, all the seniors who had attended, the St. John’s Ambulance and his fellow Lions and their partners for their hard work, especially those preparing the lunch and washing up in a hot kitchen.

“Chief Cook”, Chris Emson was presented with a selection of Lavender plants in appreciation of her hard work.

Local resident, Clifford Jordan, then proposed a vote of thanks to the Lions for yet again laying on such a splendid event. The Lions also wish to express their thanks to Pat and her fellow drivers from the Community buses.

Conrad Freezer, from Rye Lions, said: “We could not provide such a lunch without the continuing support of the public’s donations at their various fund-raising events.

“We would welcome enquiries from any adult in the area who would like to have fun whilst raising money for those less fortunate who should ring 01797 252921 to find out more about the Lions.”

Rye Lions next major fund-raising event is the Annual Rye Raft Race and Fete on Sunday August 5 and any organisation wishing to enter a raft should ring Bob Harvey on 0845 833 2825.

Stall places at the Fete are filling fast and stall-holders wishing to reserve a space should contact Reg Emson on 01797 224174.
