Littlehampton con prompts call to join Safer Arun Partnership

VULNERABLE residents are being urged to nominate a neighbour, after a Littlehampton pensioner was conned out of £5,500.

The man, who lived in the town’s Beach ward, was taken to the bank to withdraw the money, by thieves who carried out a small amount of work on his house, in June.

It has prompted the Safer Arun Partnership to remind residents about its Nominate a Neighbour scheme, which encourages elderly or vulnerable residents to enlist a trusted friend or neighbour to check the identities of unexpected callers.

Paul Wotherspoon, Arun District Council’s cabinet member for community safety, and chairman of the partnership, said: “This scheme is all about helping vulnerable people stay safe, and gives older residents confidence to turn away unknown callers.

“We need friends and relatives to reinforce our message that if someone calls at the door and they are a stranger, do not let them in.

“Genuine callers will understand and will not mind verifying their identity.”
