Man beaten by gang of four in the town centre

A MAN was hospitalised following a vicious gang assault in the centre of Battle.

The victim was found laying on the ground with injuries all over his body after the group attacked him with an object in the middle of the High Street one evening last week.

It is believed the 26-year-old victim, who hails from Battle, was involved in an argument with the group shortly before he was attacked at 11pm on Wednesday September 5.

Four men beat the victim with an unknown object, leaving him with a deep cut to his left cheek and cuts and abrasions all over his head and body.

A member of the public called the emergency services, who arrived at the scene to find the man on the ground outside the Pilgrims Rest.

He was taken to the Conquest Hospital in Hastings for treatment.

There are currently no descriptions of the attackers, except that they were all wearing ‘hoodies’ at the time of the assault.

Police have interviewed witnesses and are checking CCTV footage in a bid to identify the group.

Police say it is unclear what triggered the row between the men, but the attack is not being linked to any other incident in the town.

The officer added that such a crime was ‘unusual’ for Battle.

An 18-year-old man from Battle has been arrested and questioned in connection with the incident.

He has since been released on bail until November 12.
