BIG SCREEN SOCIAL NIGHT: The next Big Screen Social Night will be on Saturday June 18th with the screening of “The Imitation Game” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightly, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, Tuppence Middleton and others. “A superb thriller and a worthy biopic of a real hero. It’s also simultaneously an impressive debut for screenwriter Graham Moore, and a big-screen career highlight for Benedict Cumberbatch.” (Empire magazine) Again, invite friends and family. It will be the usual £5.00 donation with complimentary film and refreshments. Doors open 7.30 pm.

MOUNTFIELD CLUB: The Mr & Mrs Charity Night recently held at the Club by Jodie and Elliott was a huge success with eight couples entering on the night. The eventual winners were Paul and Hayley Last. All money raised on the night will be going to Cancer Research UK. Last Saturday’s Quiz Night was also well attended with all proceeds raised on the night going to the Air Ambulance charity. The winning team was made up of Kevin Gray, Colin Elmes, Samantha Wood, Andy Saunders, Jacqueline Sillitoe and Tasha Saunders.

The Club is looking for more snooker and darts players, for their Winter League teams; please get in touch with Steve Smith on 07720 298971 if interested. More events will be announced soon.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: A reminder of the three key dates for the Mountfield Horticultural Society. First, the coffee morning and plant sale will be at 4, Eatenden Lane at 10.30 on Sunday 19th June. Go along and sell some plants, buy some plants, have coffee and lovely cake — and a good natter. Then, the annual outing will be a coach trip to the ever-popular RHS Wisley on Sunday July 3rd, open to members and non-members. Contact Celia Morris on 01580 880458. Finally. the Annual Flower Show will take place on Saturday July 30th Village Hall. For the photographers amongst you there will be four open classes, “Country Wildlife”, “Shrub in Flower”, “Sunset or Sunrise” and “Bridge”. And this year there is also an under-16 class enitled “Mountfield Village”.

NIGHTJAR WALKS: Dave Gasson is running his usual walks, starting from Darwell Hole car park just before 8.00 pm on Fridays 10th, 17th and 24th June and 3rd July. The evening chorus, maybe glow worms and, with luck, the eerie whirring of nightjars.

BETTY’S BENCH: Thanks to the generosity of British Gypsum, in the form of Paul Byron, the Engineering Manager who authorised the work, the bench dedicated to Betty Stace round the oak beside the Club at the Village Hall has been beautifully renewed by Steve Phipps.

FINALLY: A few weeks back, we mentioned the bank beneath the Photonic sign by the Village Hall. The early purple orchids are now coming through and it’s a real sight. It looks like the background in those medieval tapestries with the virgin and unicorn that we wondered about organising a reconstruction photoshoot but you just can’t find the virgins these days. Paul Last contacted us to say that BG have trumped it on the bank between the car park and the offices where they have bee and fly orchids.
