LEWES NEVILLE WI: At the meeting of Lewes Neville WI held at the St Mary's Church Hall, Highdown Road on Wednesday August 17 we enjoyed a very entertaining and informative talk given by Lesley Baker who is a tree surgeon. We were very grateful to her for stepping in as our scheduled speaker was unable to come. We heard from Lesley about how she got into tree surgery which is not a career we identify with women. She showed us the work wear and equipment she uses including a massive chainsaw known as Mary. We heard about the escapades she has had which are many and varied and include cutting trees at London Zoo. We enjoyed her talk very much although we did not fancy swinging from a rope high up a tree with a chain saw in our hand. Our next meeting is on September 21 and we shall be hearing from Lee Bramley. His talk is titled Lee's Bees, a year in the life of a bee keeper. The competition will be Flower of the Month.

GARDENING CLUB: In August the St Mary’s Gardening Club usually goes on a trip to visit a garden of interest. This year we only went as far as Alison Soudain’s garden in South Way where we enjoyed a lovely garden party. It was a gorgeous day with beautiful weather and we sat in Alison’s garden and admired her very beautiful roses and a superb view of the Downs while drinking tea and chatting, not to mention eating a splendid tea of sandwiches, scones and exceptionally delicious cakes. There was a raffle as well. A truly memorable afternoon. Thank you, Alison, for your generous hospitality. On Saturday September 3 we will be holding our Summer Show at the St Mary’s Social Centre from 2pm to 4.30pm. There will be exhibits of vegetables, fruit, flowers, cookery, flower arrangements, craft and also children’s classes. The show is open to all and if you fancy having a go at entering some of the classes, a schedule is available by calling Vicki on 01273 475521. Visitors to the show are very welcome. You can admire the exhibits and enjoy a cup of and delicious homemade cake (at a very reasonable price). There is a grand raffle, bookstall, produce and plant stall and bottle tombola. We look forward to seeing you there.

RIVERSIDE CLUB: As many of you know I am the Chairman of this Lewes over 50’s club which needs assistance if it is to continue running. We have a committee and as is usual with clubs, it is the same few people who do all the work each week. None of the members are getting any younger and we need some help. Our lovely secretary has been doing it for years and is not able to any longer due to ill health and we are seeking a kind person to do this role, which will amount to approximately four administrative hours a month. Everything we do for the club is voluntary and the secretary role is probably the most important, being responsible for taking minutes three/four times a year, and also typing up and putting together the programmes three times a year. We meet every Friday afternoon at Cliffe Church Hall to be entertained for an hour or so with afternoon tea. If you feel able to give us a few hours of your time please contact me.
