Observer campaign for hospice

THE Observer this week launches one of the biggest campaigns in our history - to raise £150,000 for St Michael's Hospice.

Over the years St Michael's has helped and cared for thousands of people - and now they want help to continue their wonderful work.

The appeal is to raise enough money for a new, fully-equipped two-bedroom ward that will help ease the suffering of countless patients, while giving a greater flexibility throughout the rest of the hospice.

St Michael's has supported patients for the past 21 years and its work has touched the lives of so many. Offering free help, advice and services to those facing their final moments it also provides a vital touchstone for friends and relatives at a time of need.

Opening its doors with just six beds 21 years ago, the building now holds 29 beds, together with day care and hospice at home. The hospice has grown from its humble beginnings - but so have its needs.

And that is why the Observer is launching its Hospice Ward Appeal - asking readers to rally round and help raise the 150,000 needed. It's a massive total, but we believe you can smash it in 2004.

Observer Editor Michael Beard said: "It is a huge and daunting challenge but over the years Observer readers have shown that when it comes to good causes they are extremely generous.

"We hope readers, schools, businesses, clubs and organisations will rally round and help what is such a worthwhile cause."

Hospice chairman Derek Norcross said: "No one who lives in the Hastings, Bexhill, Rye and Rother area for any length of time can fail to be touched by the work of St Michaels - and those who have will know it is not silent and dour but a place exuding love, caring, laughter and understanding and limitless support for the families and friends of patients. Every single donation is vital, whatever its size."

Anyone doing fundraising events is asked to do it in aid of this worthy appeal and help the hospice help others. If you have any fundraising events planned, give the Observer a call and we'll give regular up-dates of what you've been doing and how close we are to reaching the total. Please send all donations to the Observer Hospice Ward Appeal, Fundraising Department, St Michael's Hospice, 25 Upper Maze Hill, St Leonards, TN38 OLB. Make your cheques payable to the Observer Hospice Award Appeal.
