The shop and cafe were designed into the former Catholic church in the Pakenham family’s ‘back garden’ and is a much-needed amenity in the village.

The launch took place on a sunny afternoon and guests, including the many shareholders, enjoyed champagne and cream scones and were entertained by a young Robertsbridge drum group.

The shop was formally opened by Thomas Pakenham, the late Lord Longford’s eldest son, who cut the ribbon.

Guests who gave speeches included the Rother Council leader Ian Jenkins, chair of the shop board James Acock, board member Maureen Harniman, Plunkett Foundation ( Community Shops) representative Helen Melia, Hurst Green Parish Council chair Graham Browne and the former RC priest Father William who blessed the produce.

A cake, made in the round shape of the shop, was cut and distributed amongst the guests.

The shop has been welcomed in the village and comes after much work and the support of the Big Lottery Fund, SEEDA, Rother District Council and Hurst Green Parish Council.

It is set back from Station Road just off the A21, with parking, and is surrounded by trees and grass with benches for alfresco eating - there is even an outdoor table tennis table.

Inside customers can do their shopping, have a tea or coffee, plus snacks, on benches and at tables designed and built by Bob Janes from the original church pews.

Local volunteers and two paid managers, Clare and Helen, run the shop which is open from 7.30am to 6pm on weekdays and from 9am on Saturday and 10am Sunday until 1pm at weekends.

The shop and cafe has impressed MP Greg Barker, who said: “I am hugely impressed with the design and layout of Hurst Green Shop and Cafe.

“Everyone involved in this project should rightly feel proud of what they have achieved as they have worked very hard to make this project a success, right down to the smallest detail.

“Their commitment has clearly paid off and I am delighted that Hurst Green residents now have a much-needed local shop and services back on their doorstep.

“I am sure the community will continue to support this venture and help it grow.”
