Battle Observer Comment: Local family are dealt another blow

IN A WEEK where the looting in London and other major cities showed human nature at its worst, it’s a shame that such a peaceful and close-knit village as Staplecross also experienced a glimpse of that ugly side at a time when the community is still reeling from a shocking tragedy.

Following the terrible murder of their daughter in Poland nearly two weeks ago, Viola and Greg Zaks, who run the village Post Office, have been dealt another blow when thieves snatched money from the till in a distraction theft.

It is not the first time these thieves have struck, with businesses across Sussex and Kent, and closer to home in Battle, all having been stung in recent weeks.

But as there were flowers and tributes outside the shop and as what happened to poor Kate Zaks has been widely publicised, these ruthless, cold-hearted thieves must have known about the awful tragedy, yet decided to target the shop anyway and add to this family’s misery.

The community in Staplecross, where Kate grew up, are quite rightly shocked and outraged.

The police are doing the best they can to track down these thieves and Rother District Commander, Chief Inspector Botting, says he is ‘confident’ of an arrest.

If you have any idea who this gang could be, or if you were perhaps the subject of an attempted distraction theft, call police on 0845 60 70 999 and help bring this scum to justice.
