No Landfill

The packed public meeting held by BALI last Friday was generally a cross party affair, showing the proposal by the County Council to include Ashdown Brickworks as a site for landfill to have substantial opposition.

I hope that BALI, with the help of all the objection letters which we must all write, will see off this proposal.

With an alternative in place the new plan will then run until 2026. However I am concerned that if we do not take steps now to minimise waste production the threat of landfill in Bexhill will return yet again at that future date. We need to remember that East Sussex County Council is the body tasked with ultimately disposing of all waste. East Sussex with its Plan currently out for consultation has no direct control over measures to reduce waste. The plan should at least include an objective to do so, giving weight to influencing those agencies tasked with this.

Yes I am talking about better and increased recycling facilities. It is still too easy for people to put all and almost anything in their black bins and thus send it to landfill or as is currently happening, across the county for incineration.

There also still needs to be greater pressure for reduction and reuse of waste even before recycling is considered. We can take on some of the responsibility for this ourselves. However having to drive 10 miles to recycle items such as cardboard, checking that plastic items have the right number on them or even walking down the road with a bag of heavy bottles when you are elderly is not likely to be the first choice particularly when it is a struggle even to get the black wheelie bin outside your house for it to be emptied? Some progress has been achieved with recycling but other local authorities offer a better service than we get here in Rother.
