Don't take our NHS for granted

I realise I am only one among the very many helped or, indeed, saved by the NHS on a daily basis but I cannot let my experience go unmarked.

Having developed chest pains in the mid-evening, an ambulance was called to me and it arrived within three minutes.

The paramedics immediately put me at my ease and set about discovering the problem.

After successful initial treatment and assessments on the wagon I was whisked off to A&E where another team took over with equal concern and expertise.

The paramedics and other staff made sure that my attending relatives were kept up-to-date with proceedings so I never felt alone.

By late evening I was settling in to James Ward at the Conquest where that same quality of care kept coming.

The next morning continued in the same vein with an early visit from the cardiac consultant and team.

What they would do was explained clearly, understandingly and sympathetically.

My procedure was very successfully carried out the next day and I was home 24 hours’ later.

Everything was done in that short stay to make the experience as painless, convenient and as comfortable as possible by all concerned, including, I might add by my fellow inpatients who did their best, despite having far more serious conditions, to keep me at my ease.

I missed the junior doctors on my ‘release’ because they were out on the strike which I am firmly behind. Those I met earlier, like all the others, deserve far greater recognition, as do everyone else working in the NHS at all levels.

I should not like to think that such talent risks being deterred in any way. I thank everyone I came across in this experience from the bottom of my now-far-less-rocky heart.

We can never take our NHS fro granted and should remember that there is far more to it than the management and politicians that tend to mess it up.
