LETTER: County should pay Horsham

Mr Zac Toumazi's comments about the possible return of County Cricket to Horsham cannot go unanswered.

Why should Horsham District Council and local business community pay for Sussex to play here?

It would be fairer for the County to pay Horsham Sports Club for the privilege of playing on their beautiful ground. It seems Zac has forgotten that the weather last year was awful and Sussex played badly. In 2014 we had wonderful weather, huge crowds and superb cricket.

Zac states that it is not viable for them to play at Horsham despite the fact that they take 75 per cent of the income from Cricket Week. The inability of Sussex CC to sell hospitality themselves is why they require a huge financial guarantee, which I understand is twice the amount in 2015.

The decision not to come to Horsham this year is a major disappointment not only to the public but also to the ground/catering/office staff and all the wonderful volunteers at Horsham who made Cricket Week such an enjoyable and successful occasion.

Without the immense efforts of Horsham Sports Club, especially Mike Beckwith and Barry Peay, Sussex CC would have left years ago.

Every County, except Yorkshire, has played at Horsham; all of them would be happy to come again.

Let us hope they are given a chance.
