In relation to the decision to remove the Chichester pop-up cycle lanes, Kate O’Kelly, the Lib Dem councillor who led the call-in request, is reported as saying: “I want the council to fully explore the option of improving the scheme rather than just removing it – otherwise all the taxpayers’ money, many thousands (the original grant for all seven schemes was £784,000), will be completely wasted.”

Her logic appears to be that no matter how hopeless a publicly funded scheme may be, it must be retained or ‘improved’ (at no doubt further expense), otherwise the public money would be ‘wasted’.

She further says: ”The idea was not flawed, just its delivery.”

The fact is that the scheme was flawed from the outset.

It was, and is, an inevitable failure and an unnecessary and disproportionate use of public money.
