Comment on road change

I read with interest the front page leader and the page two article about the junction referred in both as that between Down Lane and the A259 (Little Common Road). (March 4).

The first thing that I should point out is that the name of the highway in question is Down Road, not Down Lane.

The second thing is that the part of the junction in question has been three lane for years, so three lanes is not ‘new’, in fact it used to be three lanes and a layby, with two ‘straight on’ lanes and a ‘turn right’ lane.

The only thing that has changed physically is that the left lane is no longer ‘straight on’ up King Offa Way (KOW), but ‘turn left’ onto the new road.

As I see it, the main problem is the reduction of two ‘straight on’ lanes to one, causing more tell back for those who want to go up KOW and thus more tell back in general west of the junction in question, and of course the modified timing of the traffic lights.

This problem should have been foreseen at the junction design stage and could have been resolved by extending the layby back towards Little Common for a few yards making a fourth lane for turning left. Also, it seems, the timing of the lights could be improved, as traffic now backs up much further along London Road and Beeching Road than ever it used to.

Regarding the Highways England spokesman’s comment about box junction. What utter tosh.

Of course a box junction would make the junction safer for traffic turning into and out of Down Road as the traffic from Little Common frequently block the junction.
