Danger increasing

I WOULD like to make a few comments following Robin Hollister’s letter (Gazette, October 27) about traffic in the area of River Beach Primary School.

For a long time, I have given thought to the dangers to pedestrians, in particular schoolchildren in the vicinity of Queen Street and Cornwall Road/Highdown Drive.

What with parking along both sides, which requires passing motorists to dodge into the nearest small passing space in order to proceed, and reversing out of each other’s way, it is becoming increasingly dangerous.

Most of this area is now reduced to single track driving, and motorists have to keep a very sharp watch on children who are often oblivious to the dangers when crossing the street between the parked cars.

On many occasions I have witnessed vehicles travelling far too fast, in particular along Cornwall Road, and I wonder why this road hasn’t yet been designated a 20 miles per hour limit – it will have to be eventually or, have some rumble strips put in place to remind drivers to slow down.

The junction of Queen Street and Cornwall Road is quite dangerous after dark, as it is not very well lit, and people often walk straight into the path of cars when crossing there.

Also, the driver’s view is sometimes obstructed by large vans which are parked overnight, so I really do suggest that a reduction in speed is called for.

Twice a day this area is flooded with schoolchildren of all ages, and it really is time something positive is done to make it safer for all.

To do nothing is not an option; we must not put it off until a fatality occurs, so I ask those with the power to remedy this problem to do something about road safety in this area as soon as possible.
