'Hands off our heritage'

I WROTE to the Gazette in March, 2007, highlighting the proposed desecration of Littlehampton's historic buildings, and urging Arun District Council to say NO to plans for the redevelopment of the Rustington Convalescent Home site.

The formal submission of a planning application by Barrett Southern Counties has angered not only the Rustington Heritage Association, but also residents in Littlehampton and Rustington.

The original architect who produced the feasibility study in 2007 stated at the time: "Any building included in the development of the site would reflect the style and character of the existing buildings on the site."

Having seen the latest plans at Arun Civic Centre, it is obvious this has now been abandoned for yet another cheap and nasty development of the kind that is spreading throughout the Arun district. Rustington Convalescent Home is the only such building in Sussex situated within 100 yards of the sea, and everybody remembers it when they return home from a visit to our town. It really would be a tragedy to spoil this beautiful, old house by appending a modern, curved apartment block to the west end of the building. Come on, you residents of Littlehampton and Rustington, write a letter to the Arun planning officers and tell them to keep the developers' hands off our heritage.
