If I win, people of Rustington will come first

IN response to the story (Gazette, August 27) about the Rustington Parish Council elections on September 17, I'd like to reassure everyone that, given the opportunity to serve the public, I would naturally put the people of Rustington before politics.

I am a Rustington resident. I believe in democracy.

For those who don't know me, I am already working with the police community support officers on a project for the improvement of our community, dropped kerbs for those who need them, and reducing social conflict between young and more senior citizens. I have been asked to consider supporting a local youth committee and could do more, given the chance.

When I saw the by-election advertisement in the Gazette, I wrote a letter asking to be considered for the position under my own name, independently, as I was aware that calling a by-election would cost the parish council dearly and that the village preferred the non-political route.

I was told that a certain Mr A. Cooper had called the election. I have since become aware that only two of the 16 councillors had been democratically elected by the public.

Fourteen of the council members, however good they are at the job, have been selected by the council itself, not by you or me. To prevent the parish council, which is ultimately funded by the council tax payers, from becoming a quango of non-elected members, it has to go through the process of asking residents to vote.

If by any chance you haven't received your polling card, please check it out with Arun Civic Centre in Littlehampton, and if you want to vote by post, just ask Lauren, who will be most helpful. So, please don't forget to use your vote to ensure that the best person for the job is elected, someone who will work hard for you, to ensure that Rustington has a sustainable future.
