LETTER: New lighting is disrupting sleep

What is the collective term for lamp-posts - a ‘herd’ or perhaps, a ‘clutch’?

Whatever it is, someone in the bowels of West Sussex County Council has ordered a job lot of dark green lamp-standards - sufficient to illuminate the entire county.

I am sure there is a sound reason for this renewal of street furniture but the increased height of the lamp-posts is a concern for some who require a dark environment to enable them to gain essential sleep.

Take, for example, my own road which happens to be a cul-de-sac which does not attract through traffic.

Lamp-posts which have provided sufficient illumination at a reasonable height for the past 45 years or so have been replaced with standards more suited to dual carriageways - which cast white light into the bedrooms of some flat-dwellers - thus preventing a decent night’s sleep.

So, on behalf of all those poor souls affected by intrusive light, my earnest plea to those responsible is, ‘Darken our lightness, we beseech thee, that we might know the blessings of a good night’s rest and not suffer the ill-effects of night starvation’.

Thanks!
