No place to hide for Labour

With Vote Leave triumphant in the EU referendum, the British people have effectively stuck two fingers up to the wealthy and big businesses who have dominated our lives for decades.

Giant corporations and entrepreneurial pirates don’t field candidates at elections, yet their activities affect every one of us. On this supremely important occasion, however, all they could do was bluster and threaten, their power and wealth being useless.

So democracy, I mean real democracy, has prevailed.

On the political side, don’t imagine the Tories are fatally split. There isn’t a single one of them who doesn’t believe they are born to rule.

Which brings us to Labour.

In an act of betrayal so remarkable as to be almost beyond belief, their leader Jeremy Corbyn, a lifelong activist against monopolistic and institutionalised capitalism, actually aligned the party with the very people who were responsible for the crash: FTSE100 CEOs, hedgefunds, bankers, international neoliberal organisations, eg IMF and OECD, business lobby groups such as the CBI, and so on.

In fact, those who finance and support the Tory party.

All this will not be forgotten.

There is no hiding place for Labour now. With the EU booted out of the country - and other countries likely to do the same - Labour’s fig leaf for the protection of workers’ rights and the living standards and prospects of the ordinary people generally, has been blown away.

As they say: the emperor has no clothes.

And all Labour has now is rags. It’s the parade of the old new, again. I can’t see any way back for Labour.

Quite possibly, the future belongs to the Greens and the Labour grassroots movement known as Momentum, or as an as yet unformed popular groundswell and those trade unionists - and they are legion - who stayed true and kept the people’s flag flying.
