Recognising Ron

Yes, I recognise Ron Cocozza, mentioned in the Looking Back feature on Wigmore Athletic (Gazette, May 22).

During the Second World War, I was in the Army Cadets and played in their football team in, I think, the Minor League.

We played at Waterworks Lane, being thrashed by Ron’s team, I think called Broadwater Minors, 10, 12, 15-nil. They were tops, even then.

Yes, us lads had great times in the town. Social evenings were so popular in the local villages. Saturday night black-out dances would be packed at the Worthing Assembly Hall, including Canadians stationed in the area. Then the homeward march to Durrington, where I lived in the black-out.

I was called up in the last months of the war, seeing service in India, Singapore and Malaya, returning home to find those wonderful nights at the Assembly Hall were just memories.

Recently I went to a wedding and did some jiving about, not bad for an 87-year-old.
