Support Battle’s car park takeover

ONCE again we see Rother District Council (RDC) hell-bent on extorting an additional £100,000 a year from the residents of outlying areas such as Battle, Robertsbridge and Rye (Battle Observer, 18/11/11).

Meanwhile the local economies in these areas continue to suffer, in part as a direct consequence of the exorbitant parking charges.

And what does RDC do with these ill-gotten parking revenues – it squanders millions on the disastrous Bexhill seafront development, whilst sustaining ample street parking in Bexhill.

Quite clearly the brief of RDC is to tax the outlying Rother area, for the benefit of Bexhill.

Battle Town Council (BTC) should be supported in its attempt to gain control over car parking in the town and we hope that the government’s much vaunted Localism bill can help by living up to its claim to shift power to local communities.

Maybe our MP, instead of campaigning to save himself, should help BTC realise the aspirations of the Localism bill, to ensure Battle has control of the town’s parking?
