The only truly moral position

George Orwell wrote,'What sickens me about left-wing people, especially the intellectuals, is their utter ignorance of the way things actually happen.'

This was true in the 1930s and sadly remains true today.

If Mr Griffiths would take off his red coloured glasses, and look at the evidence of history, he might see that capitalism is actually the most moral system yet devised in the affairs of man.

Capitalism has lifted billions of people out of poverty, creating healthier, more prosperous societies and bringing higher living standards for all.

Look around you – who doesn’t have a mobile phone? What family doesn’t have a car? Not many.

The wealth that allows you to have these things, go on nice holidays etc was created by capitalism. Of course, there are still pockets of poverty in capitalist countries because we don’t live in a Utopia.

But we do live in a meritocracy where intelligence and hard work are rewarded, and even for those who fall behind, capitalism provides a safety net via the welfare state, paid for by tax payers as a result of wealth creation because of capitalism. And we would all be better off if it wasn’t for governments, socialists and corporatists trying to curtail free market capitalism.

I note that Mr Griffiths can’t resist having a sly dig at the USA, the great Bogeyman of leftists. It appears that like most socialists, he is unable to differentiate between corporatism and free market capitalism – its exact opposite.

As this is a letter, and not an essay, I will simply point out that corporatism is about creating artificial monopolies that drive up prices and punish the consumer. Capitalism is about the free exchange of goods and services.

I don’t like labels, but I recognize that there are fundamentally only two political positions: voluntaryist and coercionist. I know where I stand, and I stand for capitalism for two reason: 1) it works, and 2) it’s the only truly moral position.
