The referendum is a sham

On February 9 in Berlin was launched the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025.

Unsurprisingly, this momentous event received scant cover from the British media.

Yet DiEM25 calls time on an EU corrupted by the wealthy and big business, serving only their interests.

In this country the referendum is a fraud got up to appease Europhobes, particularly in the Tory party.

David Cameron’s ‘reforms’ are nothing more than special pleading. Whichever way you vote the net result will be to leave the establishment firmly in control.

For those of us – and we are legion – who reject Cameron and the corrupt EU institutions, both of whom have failed the people, the referendum does not answer. That is why the Democracy in Europe Movement is so important.

With the former Greek finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis, in the vanguard and with grassroots and trade unionists et al from across Europe, including Britain, it shows there is another way. And with clout.

As for those who fondly imagine that the UK can go its own way in the world, they are deluded. There are massive trade deals in place and in the offing which render the very word sovereignty meaningless.

The referendum is designed to maintain the status quo.

So, unless there is some serious reworking, when the day comes I will spoil my ballot paper by writing over it in large print: DIEM2025.

Is that plain enough for you, Mr Shadwell?
