Why are Lib Dems bringing politics into parish affairs?

I WAS very upset to read (Gazette, August 27) that the Liberal Democrats are bringing party politics to Rustington Parish Council.

Our parish council has maintained, over a very long time, the proud tradition of "independent" representation by local people, for local people, on local issues.

I assume that it is now official Liberal Democrat policy to seek political advantage in what previously has been a non-political and greatly valued area of local democracy.

Here we have a young man who has lived in the area for almost two years who claims that "going round Rustington I seem to get more respect because I am a Liberal Democrat".

So, his ego and need for respect are sufficient to bring an end to the long-established independence of our parish council?

This is very selfish and uncaring of our heritage. I am copying this letter to Nick Clegg at the House of Commons, so that he may respond, hopefully through your newspaper, as to why the Liberal Democrat party is taking this action and seeking to undermine local, independent representation on parish councils such as Rustington.
